Kuris Reunion with Sir Randy

At last, Kuris Animators finally had a small reunion in the evening of January at Langford’s Place in Paseo de Archangel in Iloilo City. The reunion was inspired by Sir Randy Tolentino who came from South Korea where he is currently finishing his scholarship. He gathered his former students in 2D Animation in 2007 where he used to be one of our dynamic instructors. His energy and optimism for Ilonggo animators was felt by his former students. Kuris Animators who came to the little reunion was headed by Marx, Brynh, Bryan, Jaylord, Elson and its creative director, Ronelo. They were also joined by selected members of Dimbox, a group of animators from the first batch of trainees. They had the best time remembering the past and achievements as Kuris animators including the much-talked-about “The BEQUEST: Origin of Dinagyang” as the first Ilonggo-made 2D-3D mini-film shown at SM Cinema in January 2008. Whatever the future holds for these young and budding artists/animators, they still treasure the best times they have shared. Being part of something big and promising bunch of talents make them the bearer of Ilonggo legacy. Sir Randy might be coming back in Iloilo in the middle of 2011 and hopefully will start anew helping out Ilonggo animators who are all talented and promising in their own way.

Brynh’s clips

The different faces and sides of Brynh de los Reyes, a founding member of Kuris Animation Unlimited and one of the group’s head animators showed his artistry in every video clips he made. He carries the screen name “manukahaw” in youtube and has already uploaded a lot of eccentric but creatively-done video clips. His passion shows how gifted and unique he is in everything he does. He was able to hone his animation skills from 2D and 3D. Presently, he manages their family business related to computers and graphic designs. His clients include politicians and private companies in Iloilo City. Recently,he was asked by Marx, another Kuris animator to assist him in a major advertising project that involves his expertise in animation. They constantly met with other members of Kuris.

2010 will be another promising year for Kuris Animators as they will once again merge their artistic gifts and passion for their craft to push through with a groundbreaking project. Though it’s not as big as everybody expected but they believe that their work will once again uplift the cultural pride of Ilonggos.

Seeing 3D

itravel Philippines magazine’s first electronic billboard 3D advert was created by Kuris Animator Jay Lord Villalobos last September 2009. ABN Dreamworks Philippines, owner of the biggest electronic billboard in Cebu City located at Fuente Osmena Rotunda is the official media partner of itravel Philippines. The electronic billboard used the advert of itravel Philippines 4 spots per hour, 18 hours per day, 7 days a week.

Recently, Marx Ydroy Silva, Kuris Head animator and newly-appointed Creative and Graphics Editor of itravel Philippines created a second 3D advert for ABN Dreamworks and Skycable Iloilo. The first of two 3D advert was actually a trial version uploaded in youtube which was conceptualized by the magazine editors. Then, he finally made a final version that will be used as TV advert to further promote the magazine and the upcoming itravel Philippines on TV weekly show at Skycable starting this April 2010.

Something better is coming…

Whatever it takes, Kuris animators are doing their best to keep their bonding stronger and communicate with one another as often as possible। They don’t stop merging their artistic ideas and plan their next project either big or small। Recently, they have been involved in re-launching itravel Philippines and doing side projects though they have been busy with their personal lives. They shared their talent in creating 3D presentation for Camella Communities Annual Awards in Iloilo last month through Marx Ydroy Silva. He is presently the Creative and Graphics Editor of itravel Philippines. His latest 3D creation for the magazines’ new 3D advert for Skycable Iloilo and ABN Dreamworks electronic billboard in Cebu was done in collaboration with the magazines’ editors. Meanwhile, the rest of Kuris are working for solo projects but they meet often to share their time for a small group project that they plan to create soon. They will announce it here or can been seen in the pages of itravel Philippines future issues this year. For now, different Kuris animators/artists are being featured in the “How to get there” section of the magazine every issue. For the March-April issue, we will take a look at the artistic style of Marx Ydroy Silva and Aladin Lacsina back-to-back as the itravel Philippines once again covers two beautiful tourism destinations in the country. It is a rewarding feeling for them to take part in promoting local tourism and expressing their talents in a glossy magazine with a cause.

The Dreamers in Kuris

We call it passion. We see it as a chance to prove our artistry, our expression, and dream as Ilonggo artists who evolved into multi-faceted creative souls. We forged a team of dreamers who used their gifted hands to scribble something into reality. Somehow, we made history as the first Ilonggo animators who launched a short film depicting the story, the humble beginning, and the grandeur of Iloilo’s hall of famer, world-class cultural attraction-the Dinagyang Festival.

The dream project of Kuris Animation Unlimited, the second batch of Ilonggo animators is a product of the vocational course Assistant 2D Animators Training offered by Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Iloilo in partnership with Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) and Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) was fulfilled on January 25, 2008. “The BEQUEST: The Origin of Dinagyang” was successfully premiered at SM Cinema 7 of SM City Iloilo with more than 500 enthusiastic spectators. Ilonggos truly proved that real talents can make history and passion goes a long way.

On the second volume and first issue of itravel Philippines magazine this 2010, the January-February Iloilo City and Dinagyang Festival double cover special issue featured the making of the animated short film in a spread sheet article. It also unveiled the hardship, perseverance, and artistic vision of the animators to complete the project in not less than 60 days with only 18-20 amateur animators working behind it.

After two years, the team of cutting-edge, innovative, and talented animators plans to reunite this year to enhance the short film for animation exhibition and somehow work for another small project that would continue their legacy. It is something they are proud of and indeed, it is seen through the eyes of the whole Ilonggo community how their passion brought them this far. But they know deep in their heart, that their story has just begun…

Cryptic artist gets the spotlight in the Kuris animators’ section of itravel Philippines Jan-Feb 2010 issue

Until now, I won’t change my mind. Brynh is still the same old cryptic, mysterious, and unpredictable Kuris animator I used to know. After two years, we still keep our dreams and passion as trained 2D animators alive. Now that I manage a travel magazine where my wild (I mean sensible, hehe) ideas are coming out for the promotion of Philippine tourism, I’m really proud to present his artwork as the spotlight artist for the regular Kuris section. His style defines hybrid Anime art with a pinch of American cartoon and Pinoy twist. Furthermore, I also repost his interview last 2008 to get to know why this guy is cryptic but truly talented by heart. I think that’s what they call “artist’s mood swing.” Anyway, I’m proud that he’s doing well with his latest business venture, his continued friendship with the group, and plan to breakout with a new, explosive project this 2010. Brynh’s artwork will be seen in the “How to get to Iloilo City” section and will directly promote the cultural essence of Iloilo City as the center of Pinoy festivals.

Get to know him more…

Ronelo ladiao (RL): First and foremost, can tell me who’s your favorite animated characters that influenced your drawing style?
Bryan de los Reyes (BR): Frankly speaking, I’m heavily influenced by Japanese Anime. That makes Jericho and his Ghostfighter gang tops the list of my most favorite animated characters. I can easily relate to the deep, mysterious and misunderstood thoughts of Anime characters. Hey, I also like Moneky d’ Luffy, another anime cartoon.
RL: Tell us your ambition in life when you were a kid?
BR: Aside from finishing my studies, I used to believe that I really wanted to draw all my life and I hope I could do this as long as I can as an animator now.
RL: Literally, what makes you happy?
BR: Right now, when I see my five-month old daughter I fondly called “Lalan” there’s a lasting feeling of happiness and contentment. I wish I could be a good dad as she grow up.
RL: Setting aside drawing and animation, do you have other talents that you haven’t share with other people?
BR: Probably my singing talent and ear for music. Hey, Bryan and me (another Kuris animator) used to create funny songs every time we take a break. We record it and mostly laugh out loud when the lyrics seemed too humorous to listen. We can play the guitar very well and yes, some drums.
RL: Tell us about the kind of music you listen to?
BR: I listen to Jolina and F4 (laughs), no just kidding. I like the music of White Lion and Jack Black of Tenacious D. In one of our wacky videos, I lipsynched one of his song “Pick of Destiny”. Man, that song is rocking hard to listen, hehe!
RL: Let’s talk about the group, what’s the best thing being a member of Kuris Animators?
BR: I want to say it in Illonggo dialect- “kami ang pinakauna nga animators sa Iloilo nga nakaobra sang 2D kag 3D animated nga pelikula nga bisan law-ay sa iban nami man gihapon para sa amon kay pinangabudlayan gid namon tanan” (laughs).
RL: I believe you created an original character named “Bogart”, who is he and how does he represents you?
BR: “Waay lang” (just nothing). Bogart is a teenager born to a family of syndicates and they live in breaking the law. But there’s some good in him, his heart aims to break the chain of darkness that’s been pushing him to become an ill of the society. So he resorted “sa pagbaligya tabagak kon adlaw kaysa mangawat”Sagad lang sya sa away, madasig maghulag kag maalam” (he’s good in fighting, quick mover and intelligent) that’s why he always win in every battle with criminals. For me, he‘s someone that shows my desire to change the world around me. Hey, I also made the animated logo of Kuris, I think it’s cute.

RL: You designed the model sheet of Niňo, the street child and the main character of The BEQUEST, what inspired you to make such nice design?
BR: Actually, I did the rough drafts and Marx (another Kuris animator) did the final clean-up. When I designed it, I try to look for some street children and replicate the character’s clothing with them. I tried to put more emotion and innocence in his eyes. Marx said that our essential inspiration should be Ang, the Avatar from Nickelodeons.
RL: They say you’re also good in caricature or editorial cartoon sort of stuff, if you’re going to make an animation about a certain political figure, who would you choose?
BR: Let me think. Manoling Morato coz he talks a lot about immorality and maybe Jun Lozada, he’s a hot item these days (back in 2008).
RL: Can you mention some of your closest fellow Kuris animators?
BR: Why don’t we talk those who are not close to me instead? Well, Dads (Diosdado Aguilar) is the only one who’s not close to me coz he’s out of sight most of the time, LOL! (laugh out load). But honestly, he’s kinda good dad of the group.
RL: If “Kuris” wasn’t the name of your group, what other possible name would you prefer?
BR: I don’t know. Maybe “Peek of Destiny” coz we used to lip synched Jack Black’s crazy song “Pick of destiny” (laughs).
RL: For you, what’s the most important achievement of the group?
BR: Of course, The BEQUEST! During the time we were making it, the pressure was strenuous “kag abi namon indi na gid matapos kay ang iban nga tawo gahambal nga indi na kuno makalagas bag-o mag-January 25” (because we thought that we couldn’t finish it, other people kept on saying we can’t catch it before January 25--the showing date of the film). “ang malain pa gid kay bisan iban namon nga upod nadulaan salig nga matapos ang project (another bad thing was that some of our members have lost hope that we can finish the project), so they left us. But we finish it on time and the rest is history (note: way back in 2008).
RL: Looking back right now with all the sacrifices and the fun you had with animation, do you have any parting shot?
BR: “Sadya-sadya lang ni a” (this is all having fun). Give your best shot. This is now we call destiny and no more room for regrets and get-backers.

Kuris for itravel Philippines

itravel Philippines third issue is already out in the market and available for the meantime at EddieMar SM City Iloilo and Robinson’s Place for Php 120. The third issue features Bacolod City on the cover and cover story with special interview with Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia, Bacolod’s prolific leader. The cover features Masskara Queen 2008 First Runner-up, Krystalle Warns with an interview at the cover story section. 2010 presidential candidate Manuel “Manny” Villar and Passi City Mayor Elyzer Chavez gained the spotlight on profile sections of the magazine. It also features interesting tourism destinations such as Passi City, Batanes, Clark Air-base and many others places worth visiting. Korean student Jung Sung-tak chronicles his journey in the Philippines while Ilonggo food connoisseur, Rey Ponsaran wrote about his attendance at WOFEX 2009 Food Expo in Manila. Interesting advertorials (they call it travelorials, a coined word of travel and advertorial) such as Albert’s Rent a House and Car (Talisay City), Le Soleil De Boracay Hotel, Golden Peak Hotel and Golden prince Hotel (Cebu), San Remegio Beach Club, Negros Navigation, Allan’s Talabahan (Iloilo), SM City Iloilo, Kundutel (Bacolod), Camella Communities Bacolod, and a lot more will surely awaken the traveler within.
Of course, Kuris Animators Ronelo Ladiao (itravel Editor-in-chief) and Jaylord Villalobos (itravel Graphics editor) did a brilliant artwork featured on the “How to Get to Bacolod” section. On the next issue, Kuris Animator Brynh De Los Reyes artwork will be featured on the January issue featuring Iloilo City and Dinagyang Festival double cover.
In the coming issues, itravel Philippines will be widely circulated in Metro Manila and other key provinces such as Palawan, Bohol, Boracay, and Davao. Promotion of Philippine tourism and travel is the main goal of the magazine, hoping to capture all market segments of readers and advertisers with its continued partnership with ABN Dreamworks, owner of the biggest LED electronic billboard in Cebu City.
For sure, Kuris Animators, the group of Ilonggo artists who made history with their first animated short film “The BEQUEST: Origin of Dinagyang” will be part of the “How to Get There” section of the magazine. Kuris notes: The film is pretty impressive when it comes to storytelling and special effects. But we love it coz’ Percy’s weapon is a pen that transforms into different kinds of weaponry in times of danger. Truth is, it is similar to our unfinished project—“Lapis: Epic of the lost key.” In our own story, there’s a magical pencil from heaven that can bend and recreate reality, a source of power and imagination. Only a chosen on boy can wield its infinite power and hidden somewhere in the bottom of Tinagong Dagat in Lambunao, Iloilo. Hey, it’s just our imagination but we hope our dream will come true someday. We dream that we can make it into a real animated film. Anyway, dreaming is free.

Avatar

We love Avatar, the newest sci-fi film to hit the cinemas. But as much as we like it, the critics speak great things about it. We admire James Cameron, the film director who directed Titanic, the world’s most famous film ever. In Avatar, he proves his perseverance and courage to follow his passion. The film is awesome. The 3D animation is truly impressive and the story is touching.
Kuris Animators

James Cameron wrote the script for Avatar back in 1994, but was unable to turn his vision into a movie until now because he had to wait for technological innovations to catch up to his expectations of the 3-D spectacular। As it turns out, the delay was well worth the wait, for this intergalactic sci-fi flick more than measures up to the hype, and not merely in terms of its introduction of the next generation of special effects.
The eagerly-anticipated adventure revolves around a socially-relevant story so thoroughly compelling that its nearly 3-hour running time flies by in a flash. Furthermore, this cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked military might and corporate greed also features a tenderhearted cross-species romance. The action unfolds in the year 2154 on the distant planet Pandora which is in the process of being invaded by SecFor (as in Security Force, get it?), a U.S. military-industrial complex/corporate conglomerate with designs on a rare mineral called unobtainium (as in not obtainable, get it?). The precious substance, worth $20 million a kilo, is the only reason for the expedition, as it apparently is the critical element involved in bringing presently-polluted Earth back from the brink of ecological extinction.
The picture’s unlikely protagonist is paraplegic Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), an ex-Marine who has greatness thrust upon him when he volunteers to serve as a last-light year replacement for his recently-deceased twin brother in the Avatar program. Upon his arrival on Pandora, he is instructed by botanist Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) how to mind-meld with his genetically-matched avatar and thereby control its every move. The human-like hybrid physically resembles a member of the Na’vi (as in naïve, get it?), the 9’ tall, blue-skinned tribe of aborigines inhabiting the planet. Jake is given just 3 months by his superiors to manipulate the indigenous people into vacating their sacred lands voluntarily, since it sits atop untapped reserves of the coveted unobtainium. However, much to the chagrin of an avaricious, SecFor bureaucrat (Giovanni Ribisi) and an itchy, trigger-fingered Colonel (Stephen Lang), he goes renegade after falling in love with a young native beauty (Zoe Saldana).
Jake switches sides because he recognizes that the much-maligned Na’vi aren’t bloodthirsty savages as billed, but noble, spiritually-superior beings living in harmony with nature. So, like a latter-day Tarzan who can talk to the animals, the sensitive alien-whisperer must rally all the creatures of Pandora to come to the defense of their peaceable kingdom in an eye-popping battle royal. Along the way Cameron pays homage to (although some might say shamelessly recycles) memorable motifs from some of his own films and from Star Wars, The Fugitive, King Kong, Superman, Pocahontas, Predator, Apocalypto and Transformers, as well. That being said, Avatar’s prevailing theme is the identical to a certain classic Western for which Kevin Costner won a couple of Academy Awards.

“But I don’t want to be an individual who will stay hopeless,” he said, thus he focuses on doing good in school as well as on being artist. His commission works have helped a lot in improving his life.

“Pugad” earned young Ilonggo artist Leoniel Cerbas, 23, the second place in the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence National Competition 2009.

The oil on canvas piece shows the characteristics of a poor family – a big family sharing one sleeping space, meaning, the floor of the living room, together with their pets and some insects feasting on the unwashed dining plates.

A critic stated this about Leoniel’s work: “The sprawl of bodies, seemingly spilled on the slatted bamboo floor, sucks up the air in the constricted pictorial space. Exhausted, devoured by deep sleep, this human array of visages, torsos and extremities, jumbled together and displayed to the voyeuristic eyes of the artist, exemplifies horror vacui, or a fear of empty spaces. Indeed, whatever breathing space there could have been usurped by the family’s domestic pets, a dog and a cat huddled together with their masters in companionable domestic bliss. The image derives from the artist’s own personal experience. Growing up in poverty in his Iloilo hometown, Leoniel Cerbas transforms his memories of a deprived upbringing into a raw and bruising subject matter for his art.”

“I came from a poor family. My mother accepts sewing jobs while my father was once a security guard but because of health reasons, is no longer working. I have five siblings and I’m the second child. I am also the breadwinner of the family.” He sidelines in making streamers, T-shirts and other artworks. “Through my work as an artist, I was able to send myself to school. I help my siblings in their schooling as well. Our eldest is now a graduate of Hotel and Restaurant Management and based in Manila,” Leoniel said. “My artwork was inspired by what I’ve seen around me,” he added.

Also, his determination on becoming a better artist and his real life experience has helped him get a top spot in the competition. The money he won from the competition was used to repair their house as well as buy the things that he need.

Leoniel’s art style borders on socio-realism. “I want to impart certain issues through my works,” he said.

Leoniel is a fourth year Architecture student of Western Visayas College of Science and Technology and a member of the Tatsulok Artisans.

Our pathway to artistic rise and passion was never easy. We embraced the challenges of fate, nurtured our friendship, and learn from each other’s artistic gifts. In everything we did in the past, it contains pieces of our heart and personality, visions and reveries, pain and joy. That’s the reason why we pursued what we love to do because deep inside us lies a flame of passion and artistic vision, a vision that desires a chance to be heard and seen as an artist.
Whatever we did in the past and the dream we keep inside us, we know that there will come a time that the desires of our heart will be fulfilled as one, as a team of artistic souls dreaming, fighting, waiting, hoping, and believing that we have what it takes to be dreamers who can fulfill their greatest dream.
This is a glimpse of our universe. This is a testimony of our humble artistry as artists and animators who are not afraid to follow the pathway of passion.
Our pencil and papers are instruments of our expressions.
What lies inside is the artist’s heart.
We are not called “Kuris” animators if we don’t have the courage to chase our dream.

Kuris 3D advert shown in Cebu City’s biggest electronic billboard

Kuris Animator’s Ronelo Ladiao, editor-in-chief and Jay Lord Villalobos, graphics editor of itravel Philippines magazine created a short advertisement clip with 3D animation for ABN Dreamworks based in Cebu City. The advert comes out four times per hour, seven days a week in the wide-screen electronic billboard, the biggest and most expensive in the whole Visayas located at Fuente Osmena Rotunda, Cebu City.
The advert started to be shown publicly since August this year. Moreover, this is the first time that an animated clip made by an Ilonggo animator/artist was shown in Cebu City. The concept was introduced by Ronelo Ladiao in collaboration with i-worx Advertising Company Limited, publisher of itravel Philippines. Jay Lord Villalobos, a self-confessed animator who’s really passionate in expressing his artistry through 3D animation did a good job. The advert supported the magazine’s advertisers whose company logo and name comes out at the end part of the each spot daily. Media hype and interest in Cebu City for the magazine is heightened when the 3D advert started its broadcast last August. ABS-CBN Sunday lifestyle show, MagTV reviews the magazine contents every week.
For the Ilonggo animators who spearheaded and pushed the boundaries by creating low-budget animated projects in Western Visayas (The BEQUEST: origin of Dinagyang) but profoundly reflects their passion to prove their artistry, making the 3D advert and being part of the newest travel and tourism magazine is a great chance to prove that dreams don’t die for as long as you have the persistence to follow it.
“Anything is possible, “ says Jay Lord, a Kuris animator who is fond of watching Transformers films. Aside from his usual advert-making task, he also does the artistic layout of the magazine’s advertorials section.

traversing new horizon

For the past few months, Kuris Animators are doing their fair share of life. Most of us are busy with our personal endeavors but we are doing our best to communicate with each other. Life is not always sooo animated and fantastic. Artists usually have their own ways to express themselves and find their way in life. We always try our best. I hope one of these days we can have another reunion. We will do that for sure. What we consider as a blessing is our gift in arts and vision as artists. It brought us far than we expected. We made history in Iloilo. Some people wouldn’t agree but we know in heart that we did the right thing. It’s nice to look back—Adventures of TASI, The Bequest animated Dinagyang short film, Lapis mini-trailer, kuris universe and a lot more. In fact, some of us who took part in WVCST-ICT endeavor on animated module project have finalized their work. They are proud to show their hard work and artistry in the recent IT Week in Robinsons Iloilo. I hope more great projects to come soon. Taking part in itravel Philippines, a unique travel magazine with innovative approach in marketing and advertising has been a blessing, too. I happened to hire Jay Lord Villalobos as the magazine Layout and Graphics editor when it was started this year. As its Editor-in-Chief, there’s so much energy and good artistic direction for the magazine that have its main office in Cebu City with a tie-up wide-screen electronic billboard operating 18 hours a day, seven days a week at Fuente Osmena Rotunda. Now, on its third issue, itravel is getting stronger and better with its nationwide scope. Behind all the good fate we achieve through the magazine, we decided to keep Kuris Animation alive and continuously working to uphold artistic expression. In every issue, month after month, Kuris will have a special section in itravel Philippines. Giving each Kuris Animator the chance to show and unveil his/her talents in drawing, digital coloring, and a lot more. We want to innovate with our craft and of course, inspire young artists out there to never give up with their passion. With the electronic billboard tie-up owned by ABN Dreamworks in Cebu, Jay Lord and I were able to show our talent in making a 3D animated commercial clip of the magazine, promote our advertisers, and express our unique style of magazine layout. The first time I saw our itravel 3D commercial in Fuente Osmena in Cebu made me happy. Now our hard work is paying off and fate rewarded us with a better chance to prove ourselves better. I know for sure that one of these days, we will bring Kuris back on top again as Ilonggo artists who always have hope and patience. For now, let me show you the second artwork we did for the third issue of itravel Philippines with Bacolod City cover. I have an interesting interview with Bacolod city mayor, Evelio Leonardia, Senator Manny Villar, and a lot more travel articles worthy of your reading pleasure. As Kuris Animators, it is our passion to uphold Ilonggo art and animation with significance. In the pages of i travel Philippines, the country’s newest and dynamic travel and tourism magazine, art and animation have a space. It is a space where artists of Kuris will have a venue to express themselves, reveal their talents, and be who they really are… for the sake of Philippine tourism industry.

Starting the August-September issue of the magazine, Kuris will officially have its own page section and will have a big highlight on December-January special festival issue.
