As Kuris Animators, it is our passion to uphold Ilonggo art and animation with significance.In the pages of i travel Philippines, the country’s newest and dynamic travel and tourism magazine, art and animation have a space. It is a space where artists of Kuris will have a venue to express themselves, reveal their talents, and be who they really are… for the sake of Philippine tourism industry.
Starting the August-September issue of the magazine, Kuris will officially have its own page section and will have a big highlight on December-January special festival issue.

our promise was fulfilled... catch Kuris animators in the pages of itravel Philippines magazine August-September issue on September 5 in hotels, resorts, offices, malls, and spa centres। the magazine is purely travel and tourism with nationwide scope published monthly by i-worx advertising company limited.
Jay Lord Villalobos is the graphic and layout editor while Ronelo Ladiao is the editor-in-chief of the magazine.
Kuris animators will have a monthly section in the magazine that will have a big highlight on the January special festival issue that will hit the newstands everywhere।

What are we really aspiring for in animation? For one, it’s all about passion. Two, we love to do it and three, we enjoy expressing our artistic gift. Truth is, we can’t think of any other reason other than passion. They thought it’s all about money. Yes, it is true but passion weighs more. I hope we don’t stop chasing it.
A lot of things happened and changes came in but we know that passion doesn’t stop flowing in our veins as artists. We were tested by hardship and many people showed up expressing their fascination about “what we love to do”. But life is not all about promise or reaching an exact location but a tireless journey. We journey to find our path along with people who share that dream. And as budding animators, we share such artistic vision to be heard, seen or understood by the rest of the world.
In Iloilo and the whole Western Visayas, many people witnessed how we struggled to show what we’ve got as artists. It is not easy to talk live on TV or radio or get printed in local newspapers about your goal to uplift Ilonggo artistry and animation in particular. Using Ilonggo culture and a famous festival as the central theme of your masterpiece is a challenging task to fulfill. But we put our heart in everything we did without clear perception of the outcome or reaction from other people. The hardest part, we need to show competitive project and hurdle financial limitations in order to pursue a dream, this dream was made come true when we did the first-ever Ilonggo animated film in the history of this region-“The BEQUEST: Origin of Dinagyang”. Real friends and generous people were supportive with our artistic pursuit. It was a successful endeavor not based on financial gain or prominence of fame but a fulfillment of passion and appreciation for using our innate gifts in inspiring people not to give up with their dreams.
Life is too short they say but as Kuris Animators there’s no short life with a fulfillment of lifelong passion. Even if we did a short film, the memory of those who knew what we are made of and what we love to do will remember us.
Now looking back last year and the training we did for animation at WVCST, we have no regrets at all. Filipino animation and Ilonggo artistry will continue to evolve in this age of technological innovations. Our hands and scribbling reveals how much we wanted to live the life of an artist. Our dream and passion is like “paperless animation”-- we only have our heart acting like the sun in our gloomy universe and the blood pumping in it is the ink that we use to draw the face of our soul in a white wide ground as if it is a paper with limitless end. We are happy because a part of our dream hidden behind the back of our minds ever since we we’re young was fulfilled. No material things can replace that special feeling of contentment. Thus, life the life of an amateur Kuris animator will still go on…
For sure, animation will be part of our artistic pursuits. There’s no late or perfect timing with everything in life but it’s all about fate and destiny.
The rest of the dynamic Kuris animators composed of Bryan, Marx, Elson, Jaylord, Alladin and others are finishing their contract with the special project later this month at WVCST. If they would be lucky enough, the second wave of the special project would be coming in this year. They aspire to be part of that extended project and hopefully they will be since they have shown determination, perseverance and pure talent to fulfill their task. The whole Kuris gang is happy with their achievements. The rest of members are pursuing their studies, some of them are working in Manila and even here in Iloilo. But we always make sure that the bonding and communication is still strong. We know that a lot of good projects are coming in and has been waiting for our confirmation. But we need to choose well the perfect projects that would fit our grueling schedule. We know that we can do something big and we need to keep the bonding alive.If time permits, a reunion this summer would be possible for the group. We just need to take care some of our personal commitments then we are ready to bring back the good old days again. We believe that our dreams as Kuris animators matters most than anything else about our artistic pursuit. Being with the team and doing something we love fulfills our fate as creative artists. We are missing the days that we were together. After all, it’s exactly one year ago that we launched The BEQUEST and made history in Iloilo. It nice to look back and feel proud of what we did when we followed our heart. Believe me, it’s always good…

The second batch of Ilonggo animators named their group as “KURIS”, a Hiligaynon term that means “a scribbled line" reflecting their passion for animation which all started in raw scribble of pencils to form animated characters or figures with the help of a lightbox and animation papers. Similarly, they wanted to establish an Ilonggo name for their group to propagate cultural pride and interest in animation among their fellow Ilonggo artists. Under the laudable project of PGMA-training for work scholarship program, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in partnership with Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST) and Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI), the optimistic 27 graduates of Professional 2D Assistant Animators Training course are well-equipped with knowledge in animation especially in inbetween (IB) and cleanup (CU), both part of only one out of 10 departments in the animation studio.
