Sleep

Let’s talk about sleep.

The Harvard Health Watch suggests six reasons to get enough sleep:

  1. Learning and memory: Sleep helps the brain commit new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation. In studies, people who’d slept after learning a task did better on tests later.
  2. Metabolism and weight: Chronic sleep deprivation may cause weight gain by affecting the way our bodies process and store carbohydrates, and by altering levels of hormones that affect our appetite.
  3. Safety: Sleep debt contributes to a greater tendency to fall asleep during the daytime. These lapses may cause falls and mistakes such as medical errors, air traffic mishaps, and road accidents.
  4. Mood: Sleep loss may result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. Too little sleep can also leave you too tired to do the things you like to do.
  5. Cardiovascular health: Serious sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat.
  6. Disease: Sleep deprivation alters immune function, including the activity of the body’s killer cells. Keeping up with sleep may also help fight cancer.

Let’s talk about Kuris animator’s sleeping habit lately.

Whether we like it or not, we don’t get enough sleep lately. I wish we could sleep well more than six or eight hours a day but there’s no way we could do it. Since the special project in WVCST is giving a lot of pressure to selected members of Kuris, sleep and rest is really hard to achieve. But we are enjoying our time together and somehow we get used to it. The past projects we did since last year (the making of animated projects- The Adventures of TASI and The BEQUEST) have been risky and taken most of our sleeping time. So with this present pressure in our shoulders, we somehow manage to get used with it. Being an animator needs a lot of patience and the best time to get our artistic mood flowing usually happens at night. During daytime, we tend to sleep in the workplace but not much since we need to wake up if there are lots of people coming in or out. To get rid of boredom, we usually resort in playing PC games, listen to music, doodle something in the paper or play guitar (in the case of Jay, Bryan or Marx).

As time goes by, this kind of hectic lifestyle became our habit though we knew right from the start that this is unhealthy. There was even a time that we don’t get much sleep when the deadline is near and the pressure is tough. We need to meet quality outputs in our work. But the good thing about the project is we learn a lot more than we were trained for. Some of us learned about flash animation and many other new programs that could enhance our expertise with computer stuff.

Okay we admit it. We may be suffering from insomnia and sleep problems lately. But we are trying our best to cope up and lessen our unhealthy lifestyle. Our bodies is not invincible to sickness and we need to do something about it. We’re not superheroes and human enough to give in to our physical vulnerabilities. We’re not those super-powered entities and characters that we used to draw. We can’t heal instantly like Wolverine or Sabertooth, hehe. We’re just a bunch of artistic souls who just follow our passion and the risk is resorting to unhealthy lifestyle.

Hopefully, we could start something better and break our bad habit of not getting enough sleep. We need enough rest since our task is tiring and taking much of our strength. Maybe tonight or next day, we could decide to get a good night sleep. After the deadline a week from now would be a good way to break that habit.

If we could do it, then that would be the perfect time some of us could snore louder at night, hehe (they say snoring is indication that an individual got really tired when he was awake).

Postscript: we bet the party is going to be huge again. The other Kurisans are coming again with the start of the waffle project and maybe they might join us soon with the special project. We hope so. But it would be fun to have the rest of the K-peeps around!
