For a long time already, I have been holding back to what I may be truly capable of as an artist। When I was young, I used to be fascinated with superheroes and animated series in television. I can easily relate to such fictional characters and their never-ending adventures fighting supervillains. When I was in high school, I got hooked with X-men animated series and began discovering their comicbook stories. There was even a time when my priorities were altered since I learned to love X-men comicbooks. an
But even way back in my elementary years, I always have this passion for creative artistry about superheroes. Together with my younger brother who also shared the same artistic passion, we created some of my own notable superhero characters that until now remained glued in my head. I swear, I can still picture out their looks and their costumes in my mind as if I made them yesterday.
Even during class hours or whenever the teacher doesn’t watch my back, I love to pick up my pencil and start doodling weird superhero stuff in my notebooks. Though I’m so fond of superheroes I’ve seen in cartoons, I always utilize my creative side and invent my own characters. Oftentimes, they even have their own personal stories and struggles which I drafted in my head. When I finished high school, I still find myself doodling and creating my own superheroes. My classmates and close friends were my usual fans who always appreciate my unique kind of artistry. In fact, I drafted and wrote my earliest comicbooks for personal keep since elementary. Those times inspired me to dream of becoming a popular illustrator and writer for American comicbooks when the right time comes. I hope that day would come soon, hehe (but you know I believe I have the flair for it).
A lot of great things happened in my life, but my passion for superheroes, comicbooks and fictional stories remained tattooed in my consciousness for a long as I can remember. So when I learned about a short course offering in 2D Animation from TESDA, I immediately grabbed the opportunity. After a year of hectic training and bonding with my fellow animators, we made something great out of artistic endeavors. Kuris Animation Unlimited was born and The BEQUEST was created for a purpose of inspiring Ilonggo artists to be proud of their cultural heritage. Frankly speaking, it doesn’t need technological innovations alone but raw artistic gifts as well to jumpstart original Ilonggo animation.
I am truly proud of my artistic gifts because it shows how passionate I am on what I wanted to do with my life. Every bit of emotion evokes my artistry to prove something great out of my simple doodling and raw imaginations. And now as part of Kuris, I could truly say that my original superheroine creation called “Hex”, a gifted pyrokinetic messiah is an important element of our mini-universe of super-powered beings with their own unique stories and dreams—Kuris Universe. As I look back and reveal my favorite superhero creations, it leaves a feeling of solace within me because I know I expressed my true passion (not to mention that some of these characters were my own friends and classmates that I transformed into my own fictional heroes).
Okay, let me tell you about my superheroes… I think if Marvel has its own merry-mutants called the X-men, I have my own “Outmen” led by a psychic scientist named Telethor, elemental Cyclone, futuristic-ninja Ruby, invincible Marvela, atomic-shattering Ravok, sound-wave-generating Maxel, mystical-samurai Kujo and my own Wolvie-inspired guy, Redfox. I also have my own Batman-like justice knight called “Vanguard”, Superman-like supreme titan “Hendrix”, a mystical team of half-witch, half-mutants called DestinyX and so many others. Take note, if Marvel have mutants, I have my own super-powered mutates called “Solarians” whose ancestors were exposed to a cosmic ray sunlight centuries ago and their nemesis, the “Lunarians”, a group of mutates who were exposed to a cosmic-radiated moonlight rays from a refracted sunlight. It’s pretty complicated to tell everything about my own mini-verse of heroes but they’re all the same…they have the heart to save and protect the innocents, a spirit of goodness and justice within each of them.
Nuff said!

Cosmic artist: Kyle Philip Ocate

Team affiliation: Kuris Animation Unlimited
Objective: infiltrate blog reader’s minds with his artistic prowess

ACTIVATE SEQUENCE: metalboykurisvision….

If you have something in mind, don’t hesitate to reveal it. Ideas and imagination makes someone a real artist by heart. Whatever stuff you have in your head, it is part of your creative soul, your dreams and unseen passion. Being a true artist requires a lot of courage and confidence to express the real you from within.
As part of Kuris, Kyle Philip Ocate has been one of our most creative, extremely emotional and misunderstood animator who found solace with his artistic side. Even before he became part of the team, he choose to make a living out of his true passion…the “gothic and dark artist” that is truly him inside revealed in every artwork he did which supported his family for a few years already. Today, we will have glimpse of that unknown artist who now enjoy his family life and career as freelance artist.

In the previous interview I did in Kuris Talk, Kyle revealed lot about his life, his artistic influences of “macabre” and gothic arts, his passion for rock and punk music and so much more. After all, being a dad of his little girl, he needs to work hard to support his family. He even talk a lot about his experience in 2D animation training last year and what were his contribution to the formation of Kuris Animation Unlimited.

Well, there are lots of things we should know about Kyle aside from his long hair and punk get-up. In fact, he’s proud of his achievements in animation through Kuris where we created the first animated film about a school statue/mascot (Adventures of TASI) and the region’s first animated short film that combined 2D and 3D animation format (The BEQUEST: Origin of Dinagyang). His original animated character as part of Kuris mini-universe of heroes, “Metal Boy” soared high with awesome inspiration he got from watching animated films since his childhood years.

These days, Kyle continues to design cars, tattoos, t-shirts, artworks, portraits with mostly punk and gothic themes. In fact, he already has a long list of clienteles who commissioned him regularly especially from Boracay where his art pieces were sold to foreign visitors. He also joined several art exhibits which highlights his creative works. Everything he does reflects his artistic passion, his creative soul and in this kind of career he chose, financial gain is often secondary compare to his love for arts.

Have a glimpse of his creative pieces and we hope you get inspired by his passion.

let's talk about Tuldok

Tuldok Core Group members with Quentin Tarantino and NCCA Exec. Director Cecile Guidote-Alvarez at the CineManila International Film Festival Awarding Ceremony in Malacanang Palace last Aug. 15, 2007.
Dot

I hope “tuldok” means a “dot” in English. I think it is, (kidding, hehe). I was contemplating how a certain “dot” can change the landscape of the expanding animation industry in the country which became visible after proving that Filipino animators can soar high with their artistic gifts.
During our training last year in 2D animation here in Iloilo, we heard about a beautifully-crafted 20-minute animated film “Libingan” funded by NCCA and made by a group of innovative animators---they were called Tuldok Animation. So after surfing up the internet, we saw their website (
www.tuldokanimation.com) and we were instantly starstrucked by their accomplishments. I mean, these animators worked hard with their animated film without a steady or permanent studio. They’re just a group of friends who shared the same passion for animation and wanted to prove that Filipinos are good animators. Even at youtube.com, their “Libingan” project was well-accepted and most-watched by lots of cyber peeps. In fact, it was featured in Animahenasyon 2007 last year, an annual animation festival organized by the Animation Council of the Philippines. Likewise, “Libingan” also got accepted in various film and animation festivals not only locally but internationally.
“Libingan” stands out with its innovative flash animation and unique storyline. It tells a contemporary plot combined with witty script and some real Pinoy elements. Several media groups have given the film a great boost and promotion citing the ingenuity of the animators with their sincere desire to promote Filipino originality in animation. Tuldok animators are made up of mostly professionals and students who work after office hours with their animated projects. They meet up at restos, malls or somewhere else not just to hang out but to combine their artistic visions of making good projects.
I believe their secret for their soaring success is “working passionately while having fun”. Their effort combined their need to learn, share their artistic style and believe in their dreams all the time. Their team members are also web masters, self-taught animators, scriptwriters, active entrepreneurs and born artists. Well, I deserve to say that they’re a “force to reckon with” in the expanding animation in the country.
So when we started exchanging emails last year, the group has been appreciative of our effort to pursue our goals as budding animators. They were one of our first animator pals in the cyberspace who expressed positive feedback with our animated projects. They even inspired us to work hard in fortifying the foundation of our group and build up our name. They gave us tips to survive the obstacles and seek funding for our future projects. I mean, they have such radiant thoughts and nice intentions to inspire young animators to be the best. Best of all, they’re not afraid to share their secrets and techniques in animation which we rarely see in several accomplished people in the industry. For such as short time already their search for their place under the sun has been successful. But they’re real dreamers and the dream that started from a “dot” has gone a long long way already.
Mabuhay ang Tuldok!

P.S.—your inspiring comments and positive feedbacks have been effective to keep our feet on the ground and hold on to our dream. Thanks Ramon for the kind words!

inspired to dream

Appreciated

The world can be harsh sometimes. It’s always the same and we hope it would change someday. When we were starting as a group of artists wanting to find our place under the sun, people have been telling us that animation can be a tough craft and passion to follow. With the all hardship and the costly production of making animated films throughout history, animators have gambled a lot to reach their dreams. It was even harder reality to think that Ilonggo artists are starting to embrace this craft even if they lack formal training, standard facilities, financial support and opportunities like in Manila. Even animators in Manila are having hard time cracking up the international animation industry.
But beyond anything else, we have been given the gifts and artistic vision to do animations. I think we were born to do it truthfully ever since we learned to love cartoons during our childhood years. Animated films flared up our imagination and transported our minds to places where only dreams existed. Being an artist, we have this need to break free of our unsung and unspoken reveries into reality.
So when the opportunity came for TESDA and WVCST to train budding animators, we were dragged into a passion we couldn’t refuse. After almost a year of training and applying our learning through our projects, it is a fulfilling emotion to look back again. Along the pathway of uncertainties, we found each other and shared our gifts to prove something great. Promoting our own cultural heritage through our projects is even more significant and relevant to the present degradation of local arts community. Our quest for originality and cultural appreciation led us to be remembered by people who understood what it means to follow your dreams. The real consolation that we are waiting for in this tireless search is to be appreciated by people who saw art and passion as reflections of life worth living. Financial gain and fame are secondary.
A lot of good things and challenging circumstance came along the way but we try to keep focus. Although several other projects kept us busy for a while and some distractions left our plans on hold, we know that at the end of the day we will be there for each other. Yes, critics and anonymous haters kept haunting the comments section of our little blog for some time now. But I refused to allow their not-so-ethical-blabbings and too personal comments about us be published. All their accusations against us are baseless, faulty and rooted from crab mentality (not to mention some are grammatically erroneous). But you know, this is the Philippines and don’t expect everybody’s going to be nice especially if you are doing good with your passion. On the other side, we often try to reverse these stuff into some kind of inspiring challenge to prove ourselves better and embrace positivity. But sometimes, these haters and fanatic readers (which they won’t admit) can get personally annoying especially when they are stating to cite individual differences and preference of our members. But guess what, I always put in our head that “real talent” and “artistic gifts” are things we don’t choose to have… these are naturally part of who we are and what we are truly destined for. So having gifts is something we should be proud of to share and show to others people who will get inspired by what we do. Well, after having said these things, I realize that I should have been more open-minded and nice to our blog haters, hehe.
But after proving our artistry, there were good souls who expressed their appreciation. They are those anonymous bloggers and friends who left us with inspiring messages to fonder. They were always there along the way watching us as we strive to bring out the best in us, the artistic desire inside us wanting to be shared to the world around us. And now, I do believe that we succeeded in sending the message and inspiration to a lot of budding artists out there…to never give up and be the best!
To Brian Gorell, my writer pals Lhot, Jeehan, and Ramon del Prado with his Tuldok animation team…and everybody else who anonymously kept sending us sweet emails of appreciation, thanks for hanging around. Our life journey has been a worthy trip.

Iloilo IT Week

Ingenuity

The recent Iloilo Information Technology (IT) Week was a promising sign of better progress and employment for many Ilonggos. With the steadfast development of the city towards its goal of keeping up with the pace of technology, it may be a good start in making Iloilo the next hub of IT. The mushrooming of several call centers and many IT expert Ilonggos, these are all visible to open up new frontiers of technological progress.
The budding animation industry has been one of the most recent innovations that Filipinos been giving attention lately. In fact, it has already reached the shores of Iloilo with the combined effort of TESDA and WVCST last year to come up with a scholarship that would hone Illonggo artists as world class animators.
Kuris Animation, a group of hodge-podge artists is one of those animation groups that pursued their dreams and passion amid the obstacles. They may be dynamic in believing in their gifts but their aspiration to highlight Ilonggo culture made their works more significant. The combined effort of all the animation groups in Iloilo through WVCST’s ICT Department opened a booth that exhibited the achievements and project of the animators. All throughout the celebration, many students and guests appreciated the ingenuity and artistry of Ilonggo animators to make a mark in the fast-paced technological advancement in the country.

Here’s the complete event schedule of the IT Week…

Written by Leomel Hayahay Pasquin (PPDO Informaion Officer, taken from www.iloilo.gov.ph)
(Iloilo City, September 11, 2008) - “Building our Future in I।T.” This is the theme of this year's Information Technology (IT) week celebration. After a long delay last June due to the devastation of typhoon Frank, the IT Week has finally kicked off. With the commencement held at Gaisano City Mall, members of the Iloilo Federation for Information Technology (IFIT) along with other with IT advocates from the government and private sectors, academes and business entities joined the celebration. Also present were Engr. Dominic P. Abad, Regional Director of DTI-6 and Engr. Roly J. Gambol, Executive Director of IFIT and ICT Coordinator of West Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST). Iloilo City Government and Iloilo Provincial Government spearheaded the celebration with the vision of boosting IT in Iloilo.
The celebration highlighted IT advocacy, IT empowerment and IT investments in the province and city of Iloilo. Dr. Glenn D. Aguilar, UP Chancellor and incumbent Chairman of IFIT delivered the welcome remark as he gave an overview of the IT standing in Iloilo. He said IFIT is pushing to make Iloilo an IT Hub next to Manila and Cebu. This was envisioned to make Iloilo as the next investment opportunity. Exponents from the Iloilo City Government and Iloilo Provincial Government also delivered good speeches on the impact of IT in the local economy. Mario N. Nillos, Head of the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), said IT is a good thrust for Iloilo especially its impact on employment and augmentation of the local economy as a result. After the devastation left by typhoon Frank that caused losses on multi-million properties in Iloilo, IT stood as a medium for recovery and hopefully will continue to be the forefront of the local economy thus, it must be boosted to all levels of concern. This will also not just cater the competent Ilonggo graduates but make Iloilo as the next IT incubator of the country. Hence, further promotion of IT among institutions should be encouraged. Meanwhile, Mr. Monchito Ibrahim, Commissioner of the Commission of Information and Communication Technology (CICT) presented a situationer of the role of IT in our country not just in economy but on its usefulness in education. He said IT investment will generate more jobs and will project an increase of 1 million jobs by 2010. This will result to the increase of 10 billion revenue in three years which will be of good impact to Philippine economy. Considering that 66% of the total Philippine jobs come from direct IT institutions, the CICT is currently pushing more investments in the Philippines to reach a total target of a million jobs by 2010. Presently, 124 local and multinational contact centers are based in the Philippines. 12 of these companies are now actively transacting in Iloilo. He was hopeful that through the effort of IT advocates in Iloilo, more investment will lay their cornerstone on the business friendly environment of Iloilo. He, however, stressed the importance of improving the quality of education among institution to hone the students to be more qualified to the demand of IT personnel in the global market.

Transmission log # 1: 3 things we could say right now

* we’ll try refraining in posting daily-diary-like stuff coz some people maliciously thought we’re acting boastful since we have several projects going on (are we referring to the special project?, maybe yes, maybe not).

* we slow down in infiltrating the cyberspace especially youtube with our clips/videos/stuff, friendster and several other press releases (again they thought we’re acting/pretending overdoing ourselves).

* we try to lessen our exposure in the local media with the stuff that we’re doing especially The BEQUEST and the LAPIS thing (some people are getting sick about it when they were forgotten in the Ilonggo vocabulary).

Transmission log # 2: 3 lines we refuse to accept

* Kuris creates crappy stuff

* Kuris are overdoing themselves

* Kuris are all “Kuris-kuris”

Transmission log # 3: 3 thoughts that keeps us moving and going better

* The Kuris special project guys are getting better amid the tough obstacles and challenge they face to complete the special project… they earn their own money and merit without infiltrating some bigwigs heads with falsified tales.

* We consider every mistake and flaw as opportunity to learn from the best teacher life could give us---experience.

* We are thankful that critics and haters read this blog fanatically, they feed us the confidence we need to believe that we are indeed doing great with our passion (come on drop us another constructive comments or anything else… free speech is the thing, hehe)

bets 2 lead

Lead

I think my leaving-on-a-jet-plane intuition seemed too early to talk about these days. Yes, it’s not going to be forever that we might be here for each other. Sooner or later, whether we like it or not, people have to find their own path in life. Life is a gamble and sometimes we have to be ready for the constant change.
Kuris is a team of young breed of Ilonggo artists who ventured to follow their passion in animation and have done great things for the local arts community in just a short time. Starting from scratch and believing to each other’s gifts gave us the chance to express ourselves. There are so many positive-minded people who understood, recognized and were inspired by the good things we did. Every little project and feat we pursue created ripples of positivity and optimism to every young Ilonggo artists.
With these thoughts, we somehow understood that leading the way for dreamers to dream for more is a testimony that good things you sow would make you reap success. We pursued and lead the way for Ilonggo artists to appreciate deeper of their own cultural heritage through The BEQUEST. I know that fate have been kind for us and would gave us the chance to fulfill our other aspirations as a group of artists. Surviving the odds and making our dreams come true requires lots of risk, bravery, unity and perseverance for our part.
Now, let’s talk about leadership in Kuris. Yes, it’s true that all of us are leaders in the group and we have our own specialty of work when we function as a team. But aside from me as their concept director and marketing specialist, there are also other potential leaders in Kuris who proved their good vision and strong conviction to lead the team. So if things turned out rough and difficult, I know that their potential as team leaders would keep the group intact and strong. Aside from their leadership skills, they also posses unique talents and warm-hearted attitudes to motivate their groupmates.
Amado Caporal is one of the most talented Kuris animators and have the widest perspective in life, it makes him a formidable leader. A BSEd degree holder, a versatile graphic artists, painter, interior decorator and a good friend of everybody, he loves to share his spare time to keep the group projects successful. Not only in terms of great ideas and sometimes financial assistance to group, his loyalty to the Kuris dream is truly inspiring. Most of the time, he always showed his selfless and sincere attitude whenever the group needs his help. Truth is, he’s just a text away whenever we need something from him and he delivers his output impressively. On the personal side, he’s one of the closest person who believe in me and would always will.
Marx Silva is one dark-misunderstood guy but he has the heart for his teammates. From day one, he has been there for us though he belong to a different group during that time. I think the best quality he has is his faith to other people and his trusting nature. I mean, you can’t convince people to believe in you when you don’t have a trusting heart for everyone. Somehow his attitude to trust and enjoy people’s company makes him more versatile and flexible. Aside from his open-hearted character, this guy is far more talented when it comes to his artistic strokes. But sometimes, I wish he was could be less judgmental and try to see the other side of the coin.
Dado Aguilar, aside from his artistic pursuits and confidence, he has the inclination to lead people and ultimately motivate them. His optimistic thoughts make him easier to be heard and understood most of the time. He knows how to share the things he believe in and those that makes him more human. I know, he may be naughty sometimes and tries to joke so hard with life but these characteristics would make him obviously a good leader. And if he could only lessen his hilarious side, then he might be the best leader for the group. Trust is, I really do appreciate the risk and sacrifice he did for the group when we were just starting up from scratch. I hope he’d show up any time soon, hehe.
Lyndon seemed to be another misunderstood guy. But yes, he has a potential to lead the group through his sincere and straightforward thoughts. He can be naughty, a big time joker and sometimes good motivator to his group mates. The only thing I wish he would learn to embrace is his softer side and take things easier a while.

P.S.—we missed much of IT Week events at Gaisano City these past days. But we might catch up and talk about it next time.

heroic kids stuff

Avengers

A few days ago, we watched Marvel Studios latest animated DVD released “Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow” from the internet via streaming. Of course, we drool and got crazy with all the fantastic work they did with the animated film mostly a fusion of 2D and 3D format. Marvel Studios hopes to revive the Avengers franchise series from the comicbooks which originated the powerhouse team-up of Marvel’s mightiest heroes such as Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron, Hawkeye, Wasp, Ant-man, Black Panther and a lot more. Let’s call this Marvel team as the counterpart of DC comic’s Justice League.

Surprisingly, it was subtitled “Heroes of Tomorrow” because it partly tells the story of those superheroes I’ve mentioned above (well not entirely) since it’s their kid’s story. Set in a gloomy future where the original Avengers died many years ago, and in that timeline their children lived to take their turn to be heroes. Take this: Captain America’s son is called James who possess the same supersoldier abilities and holographic star-spangled shield, Thor has a daughter who possess a mystical sword (not a hammer), Black Panther has a son that unleashes bolts of lightning (probably the mom is Storm since they were married in the comicbooks),Hawkeye has a son with the same name and abilities. Plus, there’s a kid named Pym which he got his technological wit from parents Wasp and Giant-Man. These teenagers are all children of the deceased Avengers… and their parent’s killer is no other than Ultron, the tough humanoid robot with a thousand lives created by Tony Stark. Anyway, speaking of Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron- Man, well he’s too old in the story since he raised the Avenger kids after their parents were killed by Ultron who invaded America with his robot minions.

When the kids lose control and screwed up everything in their secret base, their secret location was exposed to Ultron. Ultron made a fatal attack to their base and to the Iron Man. Iron Man asked his Avenger friend Vision to bring the kids to another secret place but the kids screwed up again. Now, they have to stand up together to save their mentor Iron Man from the hands of Ultron in his citadel, a former United-States-turned-Ultron-City. There they need to join forces with the teenage Hawkeye and find the old Bruce Banner a.k.a. Hulk to bring Ultron down to his knees. Finally in the final confrontation, the unstoppable attack of Hulk and the kid’s combined forces, they finally defeated Ultron for good.

Well, they are indeed the next generation of Earth’s mightiest heroes, they avenged their parents death and brought justice to the maniacal robot’s tyranny. But the best thing of all, they know how to use their superpowers and stop screwing around, hehe.

Anyway, Marvel Studios is good in bringing to life some of its greatest characters with their breakthrough animation. The animation is great, the plot and the story rocks. Hope you can get a copy and watch the film if you have the chance.

By the way, here’s the synopsis of the story I got from www.marvel.com

Whenever the forces of evil threatened mankind, Earth's mightiest heroes the Avengers were there to stop them - until they made the ultimate sacrifice in their final fight with the indestructible robot, Ultron. But all was not lost for Tony Stark (Iron Man) kept the children of the Avengers safe and raised them to become the teenage heroes of tomorrow. Now James (Son of Captain America and Black Widow), Torunn (Daughter of Thor), Azari (Son of the Black Panther), and Pym (Son of Wasp and Giant Man) must finish the fight their parents started. Soon the arrow-slinging son of Hawkeye will join their ranks but it will take more than five teens to destroy the machine that defeated their parents. If these young heroes have any hope of winning they must find the missing Hulk and come together as...the Next Avengers!
